DUTCH CLUB SHOW NOV.2010

DUTCH CLUB SHOW IN BARNEVELD

From 12 to 13 November the clubshow of the Dutch Poland Club was held in Barneveld. Hosted by Gallinova. Nearly 200 Polands sat in the show pens, a good number,  taking the absence of some breeders into account.

There were nearly 20 large non-beared  Polands, all white crested. Winner and also overall-winner of the show with large white white crested Poland was J. vd. Heuvel. Jan has always good quality birds and proved that again this show Also his other birds were superb!

The same number of large bearded Polands, but the quality was less than for the non-bearded ones. Although we saw some excellent birds. Als osome good tollbunt birds, which have been recognized early 2009.

The bantams are more popular as illustrated by the numbers.

More than 90 non-bearded white crested bantams, the most popular colour being –as always – the black ones.  But many colours were present, like white (also infrizzle), blue, khaki, mottled, chocolate and cuckoo. A self black hen ended this long row.

Roughly 70 bearded Poland bantams  were in the pens. The laced ones are  the most popular with the buff laced the favorites. Not surprisingly, a buff laced hen became best of show and of course best of Poland bantams.

This hen belongs to mr. Bekhuis. An excellent achievement, the more so since mr. Bekhuis is not so long a member of our club.

In all, it was a superb show! There are never birds enough, but this show had many.

  POLANDS AT THE EUROPEAN SHOW

Once every three years an European show is held. This means that a member of  the Entente Europeène  is organizing the show. In November 2009 Slovakia took her turn.

In Nitra, a town with about 90,000 inhabitants. This time I did not attend the show, but some others did. The results below are based on them and  the catalogue.

So, a small report!

The next European Show will be held in Leipzig in 2012.

Bearded- and Non-bearded Polands

As you know most European countries differentiate the Polands in to two different breeds: bearded ones are called Paduans, non-bearded called Dutch Crested.

Breed

Number

Paduans, large fowl

51

Dutch Crested, large fowl

26

Paduans, bantam

13

Dutch Crested, bantam

59

Total

149

In total nearly 150 entries, while t the previous European show, in Leipzig in 2006, were nearly 350 Polands. But Leipzig 2006 was the biggest show ever!

At the Paduans, large won Zahnd, from Switzerland, with a blue pullet, 96 points. He was active at the show with 14 entries in Paduans. Other subscribers came from Germany, Poland and Italy.

At the Non-bearded ones (Dutch Crested, large) the first price was won by the German breeder W. Kyling. Other subscribers came all from Poland.

At the bantams both prices were won by a Dutchman called De Nekker.

With the Paduans, bantam, he was the only Dutch subscriber, but walked away as European Master! Other subscribers came from Poland (again).

His finest moment did De Nekker have at the bantam Dutch Crested; he had only one entry which won the price! Among 59 entries, from 9 countries; Sweden, Finland, Austria, Germany, Cechia, Poland, Switzerland, Netherland and Belgium. Also present was Heinz Mathys (CH), one of the originators of INPC.

NY BOG AF LUUK HANS

CRESTED

In 2007 I finished a book on Polands. I have long dreamt about writing a book on my favourite breed, the Polands. I wanted to write a book which would describe the long history of the breed and also on various cultural aspects of this breed. The subtitle of the book is: “The Polish breed in historical and cultural perspective”.
I intended not to write just a common poultry book, but to take the peculiarities of our favourite breed - and the breeders! – into account. Whether I succeeded is up to the readers.

The history
The origin of the crested poultry dates back to Roman times. Sculptures were found of the Roman time in England and the first statues - in the Vatican museum - date back to between the I and IV century AD.
More is known from the 16th and 17th century when artists painted crested birds, clearly the first Polands. Dutch painters like Jan Steen and Melchior d’Hondecoeter were famous for their paintings on poultry. Interesting is a painting of d’Hondecoeter, Fight between Turkey and Cock, which illustrates the religious fight between the old Turkish empire and Christianity at the end of the 17th century.

And what to think of The Birth of Christ in Bethlehem; you probably know of the ox and the
donkey. But did you know that poultry was present; even crested ones?!

Polands have always been a royal breed, in that sense that these birds were given as a presents among European royalty. The Spanish king (in the 17th century to noble friends), the German emperor (to Russia in 18th century) and others. No wonder that several countries claim the origin if the breed!
The same, for different reasons, can be said of the bantams.

Present
Nowadays the Poland is a rare breed worldwide, with only a few breeders in every country.
That has always been the case! For centuries breeders complain about the lack of enthusiasm for the Polish breed. Fortunately there is more cooperation in this present time.

Varieties
The Polands exists in various colours. We know of the present standardized colours, but creating new colours has always happened. It is interesting to see that the colour millefleur
did already exist at the end of the19th century.
All varieties are described in the book, including pictures of all colours.
Polands have always been seen as artistic birds; no wonder that many paintings and pictures, and even poems, have been made about this magnificent breed.

It is all in my book! It is 144 pages and has more than 200 colour photo’s and 100 other illustrations. The book costs € 39,00 (excluding postage costs) and can be ordered at luuk.hans@planet.nl

Poland Alliance Community

I am here with a proposal to you.
I am the secretary of the Polish Breeders Club. Our club has been enrolled in the I.N.P.C. for years. It stands for the International Network of Poland Clubs. Sadly we are being removed from this organization.
I am trying to start up some partnerships with people in other countries called "Poland Alliance Community" or PAC for short. Its for people worldwide that have a love of Polish/Polands and want to share about it. I would like people interested to maybe write a small article and in exchange they will receive emailed newsletters for the club. We are a 125 members strong club.
Would you be interested?

Dear members,

It is a long time since you heard from the INPC.
( International Network ofPoland Clubs )

The winter is nearly over. The same applies to the showing season.

What I saw and heard, I can say that most clubs had a successful showing season.

There was no outbreak of a serious fowl disease, so a boring year in a way.

Early this year four new colours were recognized in the Netherlands: Tollbunt (large), WC Buff (bantam) and WC  chocolate and khaki.

Both chocolate and khaki were imported from the USA. Both colours witness great interest, also from breeders of other breeds.

End this year WC chocolate was recognized in Germany.

In Poland self chocolate and partridge were bred for bearded bantams, but not yet recognized.

In the Netherlands a special show (Memorial show) was organized, in remembrance of the founders of the club, who passed away.

More than 300 entries where shown, in large and bantam. In 2010, this year, the Dutch Club has its 30th anniversary.

The German Club had a successful special own show with nearly 400 bantam Polands too. Have a look at their site: www.sv-silkies-polands.de
